Tooth Extraction in Columbia, MO

No one desires to have a tooth extracted. However, sometimes it is a necessity to prevent pain or infection. At our dentistry, we perform many extractions each week. Some are more complicated than others, but our goal is to give our patients the best care possible.

We see many patients who are under the impression that tooth extractions require visiting an operating room. That’s not true for the vast majority of people. We do almost all of our extractions in-office. We have a team of dentists who are experienced and received the necessary training to perform extractions with ease.

Preparations For Tooth Extractions

Before you get the extraction, some preparations will need to be made. We’ll ask you about your medical histories, such as whether you have diabetes or hypertension. It’s also important to know if you’re taking any medications, including vitamins and supplements.

Knowing if you have heart, liver, or kidney disease is also vital. All of these conditions will need to be controlled before we perform the extraction, or else you’ll be at risk of complications. All of these can also help us decide if you’ll need antibiotics before the procedure or if any extra precautions need to be taken.

We recommend that you stop smoking before the procedure. If you develop a cold or flu, then you should let us know, as we might have to postpone the procedure.

Tooth Extraction

The tooth extraction itself can take a few minutes or up to an hour. Most people get simple extractions, but some might need a surgical one. In a surgical extraction, we create an incision in the gum to help pull out the tooth. Sometimes a little bone will need to be removed too, but most cases aren’t this complicated.

We always inject local anesthesia before anything is done to guarantee that the procedure is pain-free. You’ll feel some pressure, but no pain. Some pain will be felt after the effect of the anesthesia wears off, but we’ll tell you how to deal with that pain at home. We’ll do everything possible to make sure the entire process is convenient.
