Proper oral hygiene is essential for a healthy smile. Unfortunately, many people do not take care of their teeth as they should. Quite a few only brush their teeth once a day, and almost no one flosses like they are told.
Over time, allowing plaque to build upon the teeth leads to damage, decay, and infections. It can even result in permanent tooth loss, with 12% of teenagers aged 17 missing at least one tooth, and the majority of adults missing 12 by 55.
We help our patients in Columbia, MO maintain healthy gums and smiles by offering a variety of preventive treatments. One of the most popular is the application of dental sealants, which can be done in a single visit and is quite affordable for the average person.
Dental sealants are thin layers of plastic painted over the back molars of a person’s smile. This plastic prevents plaque from touching the enamel, so it is unable to attack the protective material and cause issues like cavities. Sealants are applied in a liquid form and then allowed to dry for several minutes. Patients are able to use their teeth once the appointment is over.
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends sealants to patients between the ages of 6 and 14. At this point in life, many children are responsible for their own oral hygiene but don’t have good habits developed. They are, therefore, more prone to cavities and will benefit the most from having extra protection for their precious molars.
Unlike some other practices, we can apply dental sealants for adults, as well.
Dental sealants can last for up to a decade, depending on how well you care for them. We recommend you brush softly with your toothbrush and avoid eating too many sugary or acidic foods. If you are worried that your sealants have started to flake or disintegrate, our dentist can apply a new coating to keep your molars protected. We can also reapply for children and teenagers.
